HOW I GOT THIS BOOK: Review copy as part of iRead book tours in exchange of an honest review. Thank you :)
The Berlin Package is second book in the series featuring TV producer and clandestine courier, Pero Baltazar and the African guide Mbuno. They embark on yet another journey filled with nothing short of trouble.
All Pero wants is an ordinary life as a TV show producer. However, his part time job as a courier for the US Government won’t let that happen. This time around, he is given a plain package which unfortunately turns out to be “hot” resulting in him being threatened and pursued by powerful bankers. With the story being set in Germany, there is obviously a Nazi connection to it. He calls upon his new friends and old – Mbuno to help him out of this precarious situation where in the very government he works for will go to any lengths to cover up their mistakes. Obviously the plot was well fleshed out and logical. Thankfully the writer didn’t fill in pages with Nazi history. Inadvertently, stories set in Germany and having that Nazi connection end up being nothing short of history books. This writer did bring in the history but it was handled well and was intertwined with the part making it essential. It was not just the Nazi history, the writer wove in subjects like nuclear terrorism into the story very well.
Narration & Characterization
Given that this is the second book in the series, the writer didn’t really have the need to elaborate the characters and their aspirations. However, I felt that he might have as well used it as a chance to add the much needed volume and depth to the recurring characters. The writing in general was smooth, but just like his previous books, the dialogues were choppy and abrupt. I wondered if this was actually his style of writing. If it were so, I’m really not comfortable with it. The writer certainly needs to be lauded for the narration of background and minute details.
MY SAY: The thrill factor just got better!
