HOW I GOT THIS BOOK: Review Copy from the writer in exchange for an honest review. Thanks sir!
This book has been doing rounds in the internet for a while now. Frequent posts from the writer on Facebook and the interesting summary upped my interest in this book. Post the Nirbhaya rape in Delhi, the book market was flooded with lots of books centering this theme. This book came out a year after the horrible incident happened. Thus, needless to say, one would naturally expect the plot line to draw references or even have similarities to that case. To my complete surprise, the story was nothing similar at all.
Our protagonist, Akriti is raped. After the assault she has to deal with complicated legal procedures that question her sense of ethics and morality. The society begins to look upon her an outcast and taunts her family. The story is about her thought process of handling this gore abuse and reprisal sought by her. The writer, Gaurav Sharma has done his research quite well. The writer has described in detail the constitutional process followed post a rape incident. Apart from the process the story also elaborates Akriti’s coping mechanism which is not exactly unheard of, but is quite rare in practice.
The writing was too simple and had a lot of scope of restructuring. Portraying an abused female victim’s emotion and perfecting it is no simple task. The writer, in spite of being a male, has accomplished that tough feat. The story was a bit slow paced initially, but as the trial commenced, it picked up the much needed momentum. The climax on the other hand, seemed to be written in hurry! A bit of a twist there would have made the book more interesting. The whole ‘revenge’ part and other parts of the story where Akirit’s parents support her blindly seemed a bit utopian to me. If not for that disclaimer of sorts in the end, I wouldn’t really have accepted this school of thought.
MY SAY: An interesting, impressive and almost Utopian perspective on “rape-revenge”.
