HOW I GOT THIS BOOK: Review copy as a part of iRead book tours in exchange for an honest review! Thanks a lot guys!
What is the best time to read a book? There is no such thing as a best time I learnt. This book kept me good company during gloomy torrential rain that hounded my city eventually leading to flood and destruction. In such disturbing times, a positive book would be the best company. This book proved to be one such book.
The thread that binds is the story of five women narrated initially as individual stories. An act of kindness binds these women together. Each women has some problem. Sherice struggles to come in terms with her mom’s illness, while,Sylvia struggles without proper financial support for her pregnancy, Joanne struggles with her burdening past and her mom while dealing with pregnancy without marriage. Payton, another protagonist struggles with iron fisted parents and pregnancy at a very young age. Gloria, one of the five woman deals with a cheating husband and her own affair. In the end, these women end up together and helping each other in their own small way.
The story initially sounded a bit confusing due to influx of a lot of characters. I was wondering how the writer would actually bring them all together, she did do a quite a good job of it. Of course, it did feel a bit confusing initially when all the characters came together, but as the story progressed I felt comfortable. The writing as such was perfect but I felt the writer tried to be overly optimistic. Not that I’m complaining because this high level of optimism in the story sort of translated into me in the scary situation that I was in while reading the book. Needless to say, characterization was the crux of this story. All the characters were well developed with the right amount of conviction. Personally, Payton and Gloria weren’t that great or convincing for me and I felt they were selfish in one point. If the writer intended this, she did achieve it then!
MY SAY: A good read on a depressing day!
